Taiwan: Taiwan detects two Chinese balloons in new year

Taipei, Jan 02, 2024 -Two Chinese language balloons had been detected shifting throughout the median line separating Taiwan from China, with one flying immediately above the island, Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defence mentioned Tuesday.
The balloons had been seen crossing the median line over the Taiwan Strait — a delicate waterway separating the island from China — late January 1 at two places, one close to the western metropolis of Chiayi and one other by Keelung within the north.
An accompanying graphic launched by the ministry confirmed one balloon headed east immediately above the island after showing northwest of Chiayi on the western coast.
They had been at “the altitude of roughly 30,000 and 32,000 toes (9-10 kilometres),” it mentioned in a press release.
“The balloons headed northeast and disappeared at 23:43 yesterday and 00:43 at present.”
The sightings of Chinese language balloons started final month because the island’s pivotal presidential election on January 13 approaches.
Taiwanese authorities have to date reported six incidents in December.
Chinese language balloons turned a politically fraught matter in February when the USA shot down what it known as a spy balloon over its territory, with Beijing saying the craft was a civilian airship blown off track.
