Pet donkey found ‘living best life’ with elk, five years after escape


A pet donkey that escaped his house owners 5 years in the past in California has been discovered “dwelling his greatest life” with a herd of untamed elk.

Terrie and Dave Drewry, of Auburn, are satisfied the animal, filmed by a hiker earlier in June, is their pet “Diesel”.

The couple say they’re relieved the animal is secure – and have determined to let him wander free with a brand new household as a “wild burro” .

Diesel was spooked and took off throughout a mountaineering journey with Mr Drewry close to Clear Lake, California in 2019.

Weeks of volunteer searches proved fruitless, and a path digicam picture just a few months later was the final time he was seen.

“We lastly type of gave up,” Mrs Drewry informed BBC’s information accomplice, CBS. “Simply no indicators of him.”

Then hiker Max Fennell noticed the herd earlier this month, describing the donkey as “blissful and wholesome”, and posted his movie on social media.

“It was superb. It was like, oh my gosh. Lastly, we noticed him. Lastly, we all know he is good. He is dwelling his greatest life. He is blissful. He is wholesome, and it was only a reduction,” Mrs Drewery stated.

The elk herd is just a few miles away from the place Diesel first went lacking and in an space the place there are not any wild donkeys.

“Two fully completely different creatures, however they study to get alongside and be one another’s household,” Mrs Drewry stated.

The Drewrys have adopted new donkeys since Diesel’s disappearance and don’t plan on making an attempt to seize their lacking pet.

“To catch him can be subsequent to not possible,” Mrs Drewry stated. “He’s really a wild burro now. He is on the market doing what he is raised to do.”

She stated Diesel is about eight years previous and donkeys can reside for as much as 40 years.
