Libya: At least 65 migrants found in mass grave



The our bodies of a minimum of 65 migrants have been found in a mass grave within the southwest of Libya, the Worldwide Group for Migration (IOM) stated on the social media platform X, previously Twitter, on Friday.
In line with the IOM, the circumstances of the deaths “stay unknown.”
“However it’s believed that they died within the means of being smuggled via the desert,” the company stated in a press release, including that it’s “profoundly shocked and alarmed.”
The IOM stated it appreciated that Libyan authorities had launched an investigation into the deaths. It urged them to “guarantee a dignified restoration, identification and switch of the stays of the deceased migrants”, and notify and help their households.
What do Libyan authorities say?
In an unverified Fb message Monday, the Inside Ministry’s Felony Investigation Division (CID) in Tripoli posted drone footage of a desert space displaying white markings and yellow tape across the stays of numbered our bodies.
The CID stated the our bodies have been discovered within the al-Jahriya Valley within the city of Al Shuwairf, about 421 kilometers (262 miles) south of Tripoli.
After DNA samples have been taken, all of the our bodies have been buried in a cemetery, the division stated.

After the autumn of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, Libya turned a transit route for migrants fleeing battle and poverty to Europe.
In line with the IOM, a minimum of 3,129 migrants died or went lacking in 2023 alongside the Mediterranean route, which it has dubbed “the deadliest migratory route.”
Libya is dwelling to a complete of 704,369 migrants of greater than 43 nationalities, in line with knowledge collected in 100 Libyan municipalities in mid-2023, the UN stated.
